“Live life with holy confidence and humble dependence”
Susie Larson
About a year ago, I attended a Women’s conference with some of the women from our church. Our conference speaker was Susie Larson. Before the conference, I had no idea who she was, what books she had written, or what topics she spoke on. But the message delivered by this woman full of spunk, energy, and compassion has stayed with me. I am now a fan of hers!
I don’t know what you believe, or what your Faith is, but hers was a message that challenged me and inspired me. I had to look at some fears I was living with, confront my insecurities, and I was encouraged to step with holy confidence and humble dependence into the life that God wants me to live. God has made it possible for me to live with courage, boldness, and faith. I belong to Him, therefore I can walk in holy confidence and humble dependence.
At the time of the conference, my husband and I were only a few months into a new role as Senior Pastor – and therefore – Senior Pastor’s wife. We have a small church, and there were many challenges. I was dealing with some anxiety issues and I did not have any friends yet in our new town.
I took this phrase, “holy confidence, humble dependence,” and made it into my mantra:
Lord, can I do this? Can I really be a pastor’s wife? Holy confidence, humble dependence. I can. I can be full of holy confidence because He has called me to this place, and I will also do this with humble dependence on God, because I know I need Him.
Can I make a difference where I am at? In my community? In my church? In my own home? Holy confidence, humble dependence. Yes, because he has equipped me, because he has chosen me to be right where I am at. I have a holy confidence to tackle all that comes my way, and I will do it with humble dependence on God.
And so I continue to remind myself of this truth, of this incredible reassurance. I belong to Him, therefore I can live life and walk this journey with holy confidence and humble dependence.
What about you? What truths do you live by?

You know I love Susie! That is a great truth to live by! I think I most often return to her nuggets of truth for encouragement and to bolster my faith than any other author. In her book The Uncommon Woman, she explains that Jesus was able to wash the disciples feet because he knew he had come from God and was returning to God. That mission defined him, not the approval of man, so he was able to serve. I want to live by the truth that: “We are free when we are able to give without always expecting a thank-you, and serve without always getting the credit. We won’t always have to be right, first or noticed because those things won’t define us. Jesus will.”
Wow Ellen, it looks like God has been working in our hearts in similar ways. 🙂 Rejoicing with you in what he has so graciously helped us to see and understand about HIS greatness. God bless.
I love this Ellen. I believe that to succeed at anything, you need a mix of confidence and humility, so this is a great example of how this applies specifically to your life as a pastor’s wife.
